The contributions of Muslim women to science and technology are vast and historically significant, yet often overlooked. Here, we celebrate the ingenuity and achievements of five Muslim women whose inventions have left an indelible mark on the world.

1. Fatima Al-Fihri — The Pioneer of Education

Fatima Al-Fihri is renowned for founding the University of Al Qarawiyyin in Fez, Morocco, in 859. Recognized by UNESCO and Guinness World Records as the oldest existing, continually operating university and the first degree-awarding educational institution in the world, Al Qarawiyyin stands as a testament to Al-Fihri’s enduring legacy in education and culture.

2. Mariam Al-Ijliya — The Astrolabe Artisan

During the 10th century in Aleppo, Syria, Mariam Al-Ijliya crafted astrolabes, intricate devices used to determine celestial positions. Her work was so advanced that she was employed by the ruler of the city, Sayf Al Dawla, from 944–967 A.D., highlighting her status as a leading figure in applied astronomy.
