The Sword of God
Khalid ibn al-Walid (died 642) was one of the most successful military commanders in Islamic history. He fought under the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his successors, Abu Bakr and Umar, in many battles that expanded the Muslim empire from Arabia to Syria and Palestine. He was known as “Sword of God” (Sayf Allah) for his courage, skill, and devotion to Islam.
The Early Years
Khalid ibn al-Walid was born in Mecca around 592 CE. He belonged to a noble tribe called Banu Makhzum, which traced its ancestry to the Prophet Muhammad’s uncle Hamza. He was a brave and ambitious youth who dreamed of becoming a warrior. He joined the army of Abu Sufyan, the leader of Mecca who opposed Islam at first. However, he soon realized that Abu Sufyan was an enemy of Islam and left his army to join the Muslims.
The Turning Point
