7- Gaslighting

The gaslighting technique is when a manipulator makes someone doubt their own perception, memory, or sanity, by denying, distorting, or contradicting the reality. They may use this technique to make the other person feel confused, insecure, or crazy, and to make them dependent on the manipulator for validation or guidance. They may also use this technique to avoid accountability, responsibility, or consequences, and to manipulate someone into accepting their version of the truth.

For example, a gaslighter may say things like:

  • “You’re imagining things. That never happened.”
  • “You’re overreacting. You’re too sensitive and emotional.”
  • “You’re lying. You’re trying to make me look bad.”
  • “You’re crazy. You need help.”

To recognize the gaslighting technique, you should be wary of anyone who:

  • Denies, distorts, or contradicts the reality, and tries to make you doubt your own perception, memory, or sanity.
