Have you ever wondered what motivates you to pursue your goals and dreams? What drives you to wake up every morning, work hard, and overcome challenges? What makes you happy and fulfilled?
One of the most influential theories that can help you answer these questions is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. This theory, proposed by psychologist Abraham Maslow in the 1940s, suggests that human behavior is motivated by five levels of needs, ranging from basic to complex. These needs are:
- Physiological needs: These are the essential requirements for survival, such as food, water, air, shelter, and sleep.
- Safety needs: These are the needs for security, stability, and protection from harm, such as health, employment, income, and law and order.
- Social needs: These are the needs for belonging, love, and intimacy, such as family, friends, and romantic partners.
- Esteem needs: These are the needs for respect, recognition, and self-esteem, such as achievement, status, and confidence.
- Self-actualization needs: These are the needs for personal growth, fulfillment, and realization of one’s potential, such as creativity, learning, and self-expression.
